I followed the flax-lined track down to the beach and walked along the sand, stopping occasionally to bend down and study the fossilized stumps of trees that were 160 million years old. When I reached a tree on the beach, I looked up to see a small black bird with a yellow head darting in and out of the branches. It was a yellowhead or mohua, one of only two birds that live in ancient podocarp forest (the other is the South Island robin).
