High-quality bump keys are typically made from stainless steel. With the right profile, almost any standard key can be converted into a bump key. This is done by filing down the key stop (the shoulder) by about one millimeter, allowing the key to be pushed an extra millimeter into the lock.

At the same time, the bump key’s high spring force causes it to slightly pop out. As the key is inserted, all the pins in the lock are simultaneously pushed down. The bumping process works quickly, assisted by gently tapping the key with a wooden stick or using the plastic handle of a screwdriver, functioning similarly to a pick gun.
