Dear Users of the Mechatronics Forum,

On June 20-21, DTU will be hosting the International Seminar on Mechatronics ‘4.0’ in Engineering Education. Mechatronics today encompasses Internet of Things, Digitalisation, Industry 4.0, and Cyber Physical Systems - a megatrend that is expected to profoundly change the ways companies develop products, operate systems and offer services.

The seminar Mechatronics ‘4.0’ in Engineering Education aims to discuss how we can educate engineers with interdisciplinary skillsets and enabling them to tackle the difficult tasks of conceptualizing, designing, implementing and operating Mechatronics-4.0 solutions. In particular, the seminar aims to bring together industrialists, educators, enablers, decision makers and a broad range of participants from academia and industry to discuss:

·         Opportunities within the emerging fields of Internet of Things, Digitalisation, Cyber Physical Systems and Mechatronics

·         Trends in the industry and their needs from newly educated engineers

·         Challenges of the universities to implement these topics in the educational programs

·         Current best practices for teaching Mechatronics 4.0 from leading universities and organisations

Thanks a ton to DTU and corporate sponsors of this excellent workshop, specially Prof. Özil. The workshop venue--DTU's SkyLab--is perfect to hold these timely discussions about Mechatronics Education.

The first day included two presentations on an academic panel -- one about perspectives on mechatronics education in US, informed by a Mechatronics Education Innovation Workshop from November 2016, and another about an illustrative mechatronics course at DTU. Following the academic panel, presenters on an industry panel highlighted the kinds of skills they look for in their mechatronics hires. The two panels led to intense discussions about how to formulate mechatronics education programs, value of project-based learning to mechatronics, need to allow students to engage in real-world practical experiences, etc. The second day of the workshop is about to begin, looking forward to another exciting day of discussions.
